About COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF HOUSTON

Communities In Schools of Houston (CIS) has served at-risk students in the Greater Houston Area since 1979. CIS is a campus-based, nonprofit organization providing direct services and resources to students with unmet needs. By surrounding them with a community of support, CIS empowers students to find stability, stay in school and achieve in life. Working alongside the Aldine, Alief, Houston and Spring Branch school districts, CIS is able to touch the lives of over 30,000 students and their families annually. To maximize resources and prevent duplication, CIS partners with over 300 agencies – bringing community expertise directly to the school campus.

Communities in schools in sbisd -- AN INTEGRAL PARTNERSHIP
CIS Houston has been integrated in SBISD for over 20 years. CIS serves the at-risk student population on each of the district's Title I campuses. Since 2011, that model has shifted to bring CIS services to the district's non-Title I campuses, beginning with Spring Branch Middle School (since 2011) and now with Memorial High School (since 2016) and Stratford High School (2017).
Crisis management is what CIS does best. Day in and day out, CIS project managers and wellness counselors help students and families navigate roadblocks and immediate, sudden crises. That trusted leadership and presence was felt by the greater SBISD community when Harvey hit Houston August 25, 2017. The district leaned on CIS to help them navigate taking care of the hundreds of displaced and affected SBISD families and staff. Placement of CIS counselors at SBISD schools currently without a CIS presence but were heavily affected by Harvey -- Frostwood Elementary, Rummel Creek Elementary and Memorial Middle School -- spotlight what CIS is all about -- helping those in need no matter what it takes.
